Sector challenges

What makes Offshore & Marine engineering hard

Offshore scope is decided by what happens between the fabrication yard and final hook-up: lift cases, sea transport and a twenty-five year fatigue life in salt water. In-place strength is rarely what governs.

Challenge 01

Marine and environmental loads

Wave, current, wind and vessel motion act together, and the in-place condition is seldom the governing case.

How we answer it

Load cases are built from the metocean data and motion criteria in the design basis, and every member is checked against the full combination matrix, including transit accelerations.

Challenge 02

Fatigue life, not just strength

Welded tubular joints under ten million cycles fail at stress ranges a static check passes comfortably.

How we answer it

Hot-spot stress and S-N screening to DNV-RP-C203 on tubular joints and critical attachments, with detail categories chosen before the weld is detailed rather than justified afterwards.

Challenge 03

Lift, load-out and transport cases

A module is at its weakest in the air or on a barge, yet padeyes, grillage and seafastening are often an afterthought.

How we answer it

Lifting analysis with dynamic amplification, skew load factor and a centre-of-gravity envelope, padeye and spreader checks, plus seafastening and load-out design issued with the structure.

Challenge 04

Corrosion and the splash zone

Splash-zone members lose steel for decades and inspection access offshore is expensive.

How we answer it

Corrosion allowance is zoned by elevation with coating and anode provision, and drainage, sealing and inspection access details are drawn on the shop drawings so the yard builds them in.

Typical assets

Structures and equipment we engineer for offshore & marine

From a single assembly to a complete package — the asset types our offshore & marine teams work on week to week.

Topside modules

Process, utility and accommodation modules with primary and secondary steel.

Jackets & substructures

Tubular jackets, braces, legs, mudmats and pile sleeves with joint can design.

Offshore skids

Chemical injection, metering and utility skids built to offshore load and lift criteria.

FPSO & vessel packages

Deck-mounted equipment, stools and supports designed for vessel motions.

Helidecks & access steel

Helideck framing, stairs, gratings and escape routes to offshore access rules.

Padeyes & seafastening

Lifting lugs, trunnions, grillage and seafastening for load-out and transit.

Codes & specifications

What governs offshore & marine design

The base code is only half the story. On offshore & marine work the client specification usually overrides it somewhere, so we agree a single reconciled design basis before any calculation starts.

  • API RP 2A-WSD

Baseline for fixed offshore platforms: environmental loads, member and tubular joint checks.

  • DNV-RP-C203

Fatigue design — S-N curves and detail classification for welded tubular and plated joints.

  • DNV-ST-N001

Marine operations: the lift, transport and load-out factors applied to the structure.

  • NORSOK N-004

North Sea scope: steel design, tubular joints and accidental limit states.

  • AISC 360 / EN 1993-1-1

Member and connection capacity where topsides are framed in rolled sections.

  • AWS D1.1

Welding, joint preparation and inspection categories the detailing has to match.

Project lifecycle

Where we plug into a offshore & marine project

Most clients bring us in at detailed design. We can start earlier, or pick a package up mid-stream — here is what you get from us at each stage.

01

Concept & feasibility

Options, preliminary sizing and budget tonnage, before the scheme is frozen.

Module weight report, lift feasibility and jacket configuration options.

You receive

  • Design basis memorandum
  • Preliminary weight and tonnage estimate
  • Framing concept and first-pass member sizing
  • Skid envelope, weight and footprint study
  • Scheme comparison under preliminary load cases
02

FEED / basic design

Design basis, load schedules and layouts good enough to price and procure from.

Design basis against metocean data, primary steel sizing and a weight control report.

You receive

  • Load schedule and design criteria
  • GA drawings good enough to price
  • Connection philosophy and tonnage take-off
  • Package layout frozen against the P&ID
  • Governing load combinations fixed per code
03

Detailed design

Full analysis, code checks, 3D modelling and issued-for-construction documentation.

In-place, transport and lift analysis plus a LOD 400 Tekla model for the yard.

You receive

  • Checked design calculation report
  • Issued-for-construction drawing set
  • LOD 400 Tekla model with shop and erection drawings
  • Integrated vessel, piping and frame design
  • Member, connection and foundation design sheets
04

Fabrication & site support

Shop queries, RFIs and as-built updates while steel is being cut and erected.

Yard queries, weight reconciliation and seafastening or load-out mark-ups.

You receive

  • RFI and technical query log

Deliverables & handover

What you actually receive

Offshore packages are handed over with the weight report, lift data and fatigue summary as separate controlled documents, because the marine warranty surveyor will ask for each of them individually.
